Weir River Farm, Hingham - in partnership with Autism Alliance

  • Sensory-Friendly Open Barnyard on April 16. Individuals with autism and their families can come for a special hour from 1-2PM during which time admission will be limited to 20 people and closed to the general public. Families will have an opportunity to experience life on a real working farm, meet ponies, llamas, and a pot-bellied pig, and enjoy a StoryWalk in the fields. An online social story guide will be available beforehand and special sensory kits that include noise-reducing headphones will be available from the staff in the barnyard.

  • The Trustees is also designating the first hour of its April 25th Weir River Farm Spring Festival as a sensory-friendly event, with a sensory-friendly Sunset Picnic planned for July 7.

Literacy News

The Sept 2022 Boston Globe article, State education board approves literacy screening mandate to detect learning disabilities, written by Adria Watson, highlights the new regulation that require school districts across the commonwealth to assess student's reading and literacy skills. Schools will need to conduct these screenings twice a year for kindergarten through third-grade students. The mandate went into effect in July 2022.

We all know that working with your child's school promotes faster development and detects any issues that may arise. Learning to collaborate with the school to make decisions about your child’s literacy education rights is an important part of the process and will create a supportive atmosphere while your child reaps the rewards of everyone working together.
